What the drink is
A Strawberry Açaí Lemonade is the strawberry açaí refresher base made up with lemonade instead of water. It is one of three standard variants of the same base — water gives the plain refresher, coconut milk gives the Pink Drink, and lemonade gives this.
The lemonade version is the sharpest of the three. Lemonade brings acidity that the base lacks, which makes the strawberry flavour read as brighter and more defined. It also brings its own sugar, so the drink is simultaneously tarter and sweeter than the water version.
Why the lemonade works so well here
Refresher bases are built on white grape or apple juice concentrate and sugar, and they are low in acid. That is fine but it makes them slightly flat — pleasant without much definition. Adding lemonade fixes the flatness directly, which is why the lemonade versions are often preferred by people who find the standard refreshers cloying.
It is the same principle behind squeezing lime into a homemade dragon fruit drink: acid does not add its own flavour so much as it sharpens what is already there.
Nutrition, indicatively
A medium generally lands somewhere around 140 to 200 calories with roughly 30 to 40 g of sugar — higher than the water-based version of the same drink, because lemonade contributes sugar rather than replacing it. Figures vary by market and change with reformulation, so check the retailer's current nutrition information for exact numbers.
It is also caffeinated. The refresher base contains green coffee extract, typically putting a medium in the region of 45 to 70 mg. The lemonade does not change that.
Making it at home
Makes two large glasses.
- 1 cup strawberries, frozen
- 1/2 cup white grape juice
- 1 cup cooled green tea
- 1 cup lemonade, chilled
- 1 tablespoon lime or lemon juice
- 1 to 2 teaspoons honey, only if needed
- Freeze-dried strawberry slices
- Plenty of ice
- Blend the frozen strawberries with the grape juice and green tea until smooth.
- Strain through a fine sieve — worth doing here, since strawberry seeds are gritty in a drink meant to be thin.
- Stir in the lemonade and the extra citrus juice. Do not blend the lemonade; it will foam.
- Taste and sweeten only if necessary. The lemonade usually makes it unnecessary.
- Pour over a full glass of ice and float the freeze-dried strawberry slices on top.
On açaí
Worth being straightforward: the açaí in these drinks is a flavour component in a sweetened concentrate, and the drink is not a meaningful source of açaí's much-discussed antioxidants. Açaí itself is quite mild and slightly earthy — most of what you taste in the drink is strawberry. For a homemade version, açaí purée packs are widely sold frozen and can be blended in, but they add more colour and body than flavour.
A dragon fruit version
The same approach works with the mango dragonfruit base, giving a Mango Dragonfruit Lemonade. Replace the strawberries with half a cup each of dragon fruit and mango, keep everything else the same, and you have the sharper, brighter counterpart to the Dragon Drink.
Dragon fruit benefits from the lemonade treatment more than strawberry does, because it has even less acid of its own. A dragon fruit lemonade tastes noticeably more defined than a dragon fruit refresher made with water.
Ordering notes
- Fewer scoops of base reduces sugar most effectively.
- Half lemonade, half water gives the brightness with less sugar — a common and easily accommodated request.
- Standard ice. Light ice means more sweetened liquid in the cup.
- Availability of lemonade as a base option varies by country and by season.
